How to Settle Poker Debts Fairly After Every Game
A guide to simplifying poker settlements so everyone knows exactly who owes who.
Every home poker game ends with the same question. Who owes who, and how much? Get it wrong and you lose an hour arguing over five pounds. Get it right and everyone walks out happy, ready to play again next week.
Start with the net position, not the pot
The first mistake is trying to reconstruct the game hand by hand. Do not. The only numbers that matter at settlement time are how much each player put in across all their buy-ins, and how much each player cashed out at the end.
Subtract one from the other and you have their net for the night. The sum of every net across the table should be zero. If it is not, chips are missing and it is worth stopping to recount before anyone pays anything.
Use the fewest possible payments
Once you have every net, the naive approach is to have each loser pay each winner in proportion. That is a lot of payments for no reason.
A cleaner approach is a greedy settlement. Match the biggest loser against the biggest winner and transfer as much as possible. Repeat with the next biggest. In a game of six people, you almost always end up with two or three total payments instead of ten.
Confirm every payment
A settlement is not done when the amount is agreed. It is done when the money moves. Track each payment as sent by the payer and confirmed by the payee. Until both sides confirm, the debt stays open.
This one habit removes almost every awkward conversation at the next game night. No one has to remember whether they got paid last time. The ledger already knows.
Handle disputes without drama
Sometimes numbers do not add up. Someone remembers cashing out for more, or a buy-in was not logged. Do not settle from memory. Reopen the ledger, correct the entry with a clear reason, and let the settlement recalculate.
